World’s top 15 largest political parties, Africa has one

Tanzania has been ranked number 11 in the latest list of countries with the largest political party by members.

The Global Index’s 2023 report says Tanzania holds the position through its ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) reportedly has a total of 8.4 million active members.

Tanzania with a total of 61.7 million people, according to the 2022 Census, has a total of 22 political parties with CCM being the only ruling party since found in February 5, 1977 under the leadership of the late, father of the nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere

CCM is also the second longest-ruling party in Africa, with the merger of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) and the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP), which were the sole operating parties in mainland Tanzania and the semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar respectively.

From the top, the Global index named Bharatiya Janata Party (India) with 180 million members, Chinese Communist Party (China), 98.04 million members, Indian National Congress (India) 50 million members, Democratic Party (USA) 47.13 million members and Republican Party (USA) 36.01 million.

At the bottom of the list is, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistan) with 10 million members, United Socialist Party of Venezuela having 7.6 million, Workers Party of Korea, 6.5 million, Telugu Desam Party (India) 6.5 million and Cambodian People’s Party bearing 6 million members.
