WhatsApp now finally lets you edit messages after sending

You can now rewrite any WhatsApp message for up to 15 minutes after sending. Other users won’t see the original message once it’s been changed

WhatsApp is now giving users the option to rewrite messages and fix mistakes, albeit only for a short time after hitting send.

“You can now edit your WhatsApp messages up to 15 mins after they’re sent,” Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of WhatsApp parent company Meta, said in a Facebook post on Monday.

To edit a message, you can now long-press on a sent message and then choose “edit” from the menu, where you also still have the option to delete the message.

A grey “edited” note under the message will let other users know that you have edited the message, but they won’t be able to see the original message once you’ve changed it.

WhatsApp developers say edits are also secured by the platform’s end-to-end encryption, and that the feature is now rolling out globally and should arrive on all phones in the coming weeks.

Last year Twitter announced that it was adding an edit function, after years of requests for users to be able to fix mistakes in tweets. Twitter users can edit tweets up to 30 minutes after posting.

Both Instagram and Facebook also allow users to edit posts, albeit without strict time limits. While emails can’t be edited once sent, Gmail has a feature that lets you “undo” sending up to 30 seconds after hitting the send button.
