The UN cautioned of a “deteriorating security situation” in West Africa on Tuesday, after a coup in Niger.
“The unfolding crisis, if not addressed will exacerbate the deteriorating security situation in the region,” warned Leonardo Santos Simao, the chief of the United Nations Office for West Africa as well as the Sahel. “It will also negatively impact the development and lives of the population in a country where 4.3 million people need humanitarian assistance.”
”Niger and the region do not need coup d’états,” he added.
According to Simao, the United Nations is not currently participating in discussions, but it firmly supports all attempts to restore the nation’s democratic order.
The previous week, a group of soldiers calling itself the National Council for the Protection of the Country seized Leader Mohamed Bazoum.
According to deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also voiced great concern about the alleged detention of numerous members of the administration.
