Some diplomats are a burden to the state, says Samia

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that some diplomats are a burden to the state given their below par performances at their stations of work with very minimal delivery.

Speaking on Wednesday August 16, 2023 while swearing in the newly appointed envoys she said that at certain point she was asked to change ambassador in one of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) country.

“In other countries, our ambassadors don’t know what they are doing, they are just there. I met with my fellow president from Sadc country, and he told me to change the ambassador I appointed to his country. This is because the one there was not working as expected,” the president said without naming the country.

She added: But also, there are some ambassadors that you only see when the Tanzanian delegation has gone to that country, or on the national days of that country, they just go to represent their country but do nothing else, or maybe when Tanzanians are involved in crime and are arrested there, that is when you will see the ambassador’s statement.

According to her this could boil down to the type of envoys that they deploy to the countries.

“I recently created a committee to go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to show me the shortcomings. I have received the first draft and have returned it to them. They are continuing to work. I think that when the report comes, it will help us to fix o ministry,” she expressed.
