Mobile phone in Tanzania: Fear that never was

Dar es Salaam:
In Tanzania Sim card vendors just before the close of 2009 feared that
by January 2010 their businesses would automatically die come January
2010. Almost two years later, this was never to be.

In December 2009, Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA)
communication officer, Innocent Mungy talking of then, the ongoing
mobile phone registration exercise, said:

“All these businesses involved in selling SIM Cards and other related
products will automatically perish” .

According to his assertion hundreds of youth and women who are
involved in the business of SIM card vending in major towns and Cities
would have been forced to look for other income generating activities.

Mungy had said that after completion of registration all people will be
required to buy SIM cards from authorised dealers only.

But this is
not the case almost two years down the line. In any major city in
Tanzania you can buy a simcard for any vendor- authorised or not.

I wonder what Mungy would say today
