The Brazilian President said on Wednesday, in Praia, that his country has been away from Africa for a long time, but promised to recover the “good and productive” relationship with the continent, which he wants to help with technology transfer and training.
“The truth is that Brazil has been away from the world for the last six years and from Africa it has also been away for a long time. And I want to recover that relationship with the African continent”, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promised in a press statement, after a meeting with his Cape Verdean counterpart, José Maria Neves, in the Cape Verdean capital.
The meeting, which lasted about an hour, took place at Praia’s international airport during a stop-over by Lula da Silva before returning to Brazil, after attending the summit between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels.
The Brazilian President said that Brazil has a “deep gratitude” to the African continent for all that was produced during 350 years of slavery in his country.
“We think that the form of payment that a country like Brazil can make is, in fact, the transfer of technology and the possibility of training people so that they have specialisation in the various areas that the African continent needs and help in the possibility of industrialisation, in the possibility of agriculture”, he pointed out to the press.
In his third term in office, after two terms between 2003 and 2011, Mr da Silva promised to restore the “good and productive” relationship that Brazil had with the African continent.
