Japan extend Tsh 8.1 billion grant to Tanzania for fertilizer procurement

On September 13, 2011, the official handing over ceremony for a
consignment of fertilizer- DAP, supplied under The Food Security
Project for Underprivileged Farmers, was held in Dar es Salaam .
H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa, Ambassador of Japan, and the Honourable
Professor Jumanne Maghembe, Minister for Agriculture, Food Security
and Cooperatives, attended the ceremony.
The Government of Japan, in support of the efforts by the Government
of the United Republic of Tanzania to alleviate the problem of food
production, extended a grant amounting to 400 million yen
(approximately 8.1 billion Tsh) for the procurement of 5,953 tonnes of
fertilizer – DAP.

Selling the fertilizer on the local markets will enable the Government
of Tanzania to accumulate local currency. As part of the obligations
as stipulated in the Exchange of Notes, the objective of this
counterpart fund is to invest the proceeds into supporting
agricultural development in the country.
