Cele told the media that the three were nabbed while on their way to another country from Tanzania and were in possession of several passports with different aliases.
Former South Coaster and celebrity doctor, Dr Nandipha Magudumana was arrested in Tanzania along with Thabo Bester, dubbed the ‘Facebook rapist’ last Friday.
This comes after it was revealed that Bester, who staged his own ‘death’ in his cell at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein in May 2022, had actually escaped.
Bester had been serving sentences for murder and rape in Mangaung in the Free State.
The ‘Facebook rapist’s escape was recently confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services after it was reported by Ground Up, and the matter has since been under investigation.
Magudumana, also known as Dr Nandi, was spotted with Bester in Sandton, Johannesburg months after his escape. It was also revealed that she had collected the body of the deceased (Bester) from the prison, as his wife.
In a media briefing last Saturday, Police Minister Bheki Cele, said the arrest in Tanzania of South African fugitive Thabo Bester along with his partner Dr Nandipha Magudumana and Mozambican national, Zacharia Alberto was a collaborative effort between local authorities and Interpol.
Cele told the media that the three were nabbed while on their way to another country from Tanzania, and were in possession of several passports with different aliases.
“It was a combination of Interpol, Crime Intelligence, and everybody directed here working together. They were spotted by people working with South Africa, and they were followed as they left the hotel – as they were heading for the border of another country. After they left Dar es Salaam, they were followed until they were found in Arusha. It was also discovered that they had several passports with different names,” said Cele, adding that a high level government delegation departed South Africa for Tanzania on Sunday, to bring back the rapist and murderer Bester, his girlfriend, and the Mozambican national to serve their sentences.
Meanwhile, the founder of the Dr Pashy Foundation – Dr Mmereka Patience Martha Ntshani released a statement on Sunday saying that she has learnt with great concern about the potential theft of her identity by Magudumana. Dr Ntshani said she is currently seeking legal advice.
She said in 2020, the organisation hosted a women’s seminar with Magudumana as one of the guest speakers.
“The event was in line with the organisation’s purpose of inspiring, empowering and uplifting women and children. The Dr Pashy Foundation further entered into a PR Management Agreement with Vibes Africa Incorporation International, a company that is wholly owned by Dr Magudumana. The organisation and Dr Ntshani were not aware of the allegations. Furthermore, neither the organisation or Dr Ntshani in her personal capacity have received funding from Magudumana, or indirectly from organisations affiliated with her. Dr Ntshani and the organisation hereby distances itself from any association with Dr Magudumana outside of what has been stated above,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, the celebrity doctor’s brother, Nkosinathi Sekeleni, told news broadcaster eNCA that he and his family were relieved that Bester and Magudumana were arrested in Tanzania.
He said they were living in fear, constantly looking over their shoulders, when no one knew where Bester was.
“I just want South Africa to know what happened,” he said.
