CONTEMPORARY and future leaders need to emulate former President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s selfless leadership style in governing the nation for the envisaged prosperity, said ruling party CCM’s Vice-Chairman, Mr Abdulrahman Kinana.
With the nation commemorating the 23rd anniversary of Mwalimu Nyerere’s death tomorrow, the desire to have leaders of such charisma still lives among the minds of people.
Under his leadership, Mwalimu Nyerere advocated for peaceful change, social equality, and racial harmony, while strongly rejecting tribalism and all forms of racial and ethnic discrimination.
Mr Kinana addressing an audience gathered at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School in Kibaha District, Coast Region yesterday for Nyerere’s commemoration debate, described the former president as a unique person, who should be emulated.
“Mwalimu Nyerere is a role model in character, integrity, a true believer of justice and caring for others…he was a good example of good character,” said Mr Kinana.
He added that “The former leader was an extraordinary individual who lived on what he believed.”
He indicated that today and future leaders should always be humble, considerate of others, while refraining from valuing their positions more than the people they’re serving.
According to the CCM leader, Mwalimu Nyerere lived on what he had believed; this is why, he said leaders should have clear visions and live up to them not be led astray.
“You cannot just move with the wind, being pushed and follow the desires of other people, you have to set your own goals and visions to be able to succeed,” stressed the ruling party Vice-Chairman, citing that Mwalimu was an outstanding leader, who was able to visualize ahead of time, trusted worldwide and advocated for human rights.
He indicated some of the things which Mwalimu had believed on; including national unity, solidarity, liberation of Africa and the independence of Tanzania and all were a success.
The Chairman of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Institution, Mr Paul Kimiti pointed out that the time has come to put up a centre, where people can get an opportunity to learn of the country’s forefathers rather than conducting conferences and debates.
He made known of the aspiration of their institution to construct a museum in the capital city Dodoma, which will exhibit the life of the founding of the nation to give vast room for the future generation and other people to get to know him and learn.
Among other things which the institution envisioned to do is to start a garden which will act as a demonstration farm for the promotion of agriculture in the country.
“We want Dodoma to not only be a government city but also a learning centre and destination for tourism, something which will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development,” said Mr Kimiti.
The Principal of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School, Prof Marcelina Chijoriga, supported that the founding father of the nation was a firm believer of unity, harmony and integrity, thus as a nation it was ought to live his legacies by following what he believed.
