Deputy Minister opens Key Micro Finance Conference in Dar es salaaam

Commends sub-sector for championing equality

Dar es Salaam, 14th July 2016: The micro-finance industry in Tanzania plays a big role in bringing  equality to all citizens especially the disabled and less fortunate in the rural areas.

Deputy Minister of State, Prime Ministers Office(persons with Disability) Hon. Dr. Abdallah Possi , MP, made the assertion when he opened a key two day microfinance forum in Dar es Salaam yesterday (14th July, 2016).

He acknowledged that the sub-sector has a large group of dependents, who have been able to transform their lives thanks to the services offered by the Microfinance institutions.

“Many microfinance clients have been made economically independent- many groups have started producing after getting finance,” he said.

The deputy minister was the guest of honour at the 2016 RURAL AND MICROFINANCE CONFERENCE IN TANZANIA.

The forum was organised by Tanzania Association of Microfinance Institutions (TAMFI) in collaboration with Marketing Infrastructure, Value Addition and Rural Finance (MIVARF), whose theme of the forum is “PROMOTING CLIENT’S FOCUSED ACTIONS FOR ACCELERATING RURAL FINANCIAL INCLUSION”.

The deputy minister congratulated TAMFI AND MIVARF for championing Microfinance industry in rural areas.

“Agriculture is the biggest employer of almost everyone in rural areas,” he noted, calling on the subsector to avail finance to rural farmers.

Mr. Joel Mwakitalu , TAMFI BOARD CHAIRMAN while welcoming the participants described TAMFI as a family of Microfinance institutions through their industry, committed to uplifting the lives of as many Tanzanians as possible through microfinance. He also said that this is the second forum and he expects that after the forum practices of making rural microfinance a success will be established.

The forum looked at universal social performance management standards and clients focused practices, overview of legal and regulatory Environment for fair competition and consumer protection in delivery of financial services in Tanzania,Role of Technology in Delivering clients’ focused financial services, Agricultural value Chain Financing in Tanzania and Accelerating Financial services in Rural Tanzania.

According to Mr. Rukwaro Senkoro, Executive Director  COBAT the forum gives priority to  persons with disabilities.  “We want to come out with strategies to achieve  and accelerate rural financing,” he noted.
