South Africa is making substantial strides in its bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with the event expected to take place in 2026 or 2027. The country is inviting potential venues, including Kyalami and Cape Town, to demonstrate their readiness to host the prestigious race.

The Formula 1 Bid Steering Committee, supported by South Africa’s Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), has officially called for expressions of interest from prospective venues to ensure they meet the event’s high standards.

South Africa last hosted a Formula 1 race in 1993 at the renowned Kyalami circuit, and the country has been eager to bring the race back ever since. The committee, led by Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie, is working tirelessly to meet all requirements to strengthen the country’s bid.

The committee’s goal is to secure a venue for a 10-year contract beginning in 2026 or 2027. “We are seeking a suitable promoter and venue to submit a bid to the FIA and Formula 1 for approval, with full backing from DSAC,” a committee representative stated.

Kyalami, due to its historical significance, is a strong contender, but Cape Town has also attracted growing interest as a potential venue. With the deadline for expressions of interest set for January 31, 2025, the committee plans to finalize a shortlist of venues shortly thereafter, marking a pivotal step in the bid process.

Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed confidence in the project’s success, particularly at Kyalami:
“The race is going to happen at Kyalami. Kyalami is doing everything necessary to meet F1 standards. Circuit owners Toby and Willie Venter have invested significantly, and we are working with Apex to ensure the track is upgraded for F1. I believe we will host the race in 2027; it’s coming back to South Africa.”

Bringing Formula 1 back to South Africa could mirror the success of the 2023 Cape Town Formula E event, which generated an impressive economic impact of over ZAR 1 billion.
