Ryan Rickelton’s career-best 213 not out helps South Africa post an imposing 429-5 against Pakistan.
Makeshift opener Ryan Rickelton delivered a commanding performance with an unbeaten 213, steering South Africa to a formidable 429 for five at lunch on the second day of the final Test against Pakistan at Newlands, Cape Town, on Saturday.
The 28-year-old left-hander, stepping into the opener’s role after Tony de Zorzi’s injury, showcased grit and skill in his highest first-class innings. Resuming on 176, Rickelton weathered Pakistan’s second new ball under searing heat, partnering effectively with Kyle Verreynne. Verreynne’s rapid 74 from 88 balls contributed to a brisk sixth-wicket stand of 106 off 23.2 overs.
Rickelton, who scored his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka last month, has continued his red-hot form. His overnight partner, David Bedingham, fell early for five, edging Mohammad Abbas (2-70) to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, who claimed his fifth catch of the innings.
The foundation of South Africa’s innings was Rickelton’s 235-run partnership with captain Temba Bavuma on the opening day. Rickelton has looked imperious on a batter-friendly pitch that is expected to deteriorate as the match progresses—a potential advantage for the hosts.
Pakistan’s woes deepened with the loss of in-form opener Saim Ayub, who suffered an ankle fracture while fielding on the first day. Ayub is expected to be sidelined for six weeks, raising concerns about his availability for the ICC Champions Trophy.
South Africa, already guaranteed a spot in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June, aim to seal a 2-0 series victory after a nail-biting two-wicket win in the first Test in Pretoria.
