Late George Otieno alias ‘Tyson’ to get heroic send off, to be buried in Kenya

The George Otieno alias ‘Tyson’ who died in a car crash last Friday evening
near Gairo in Morogoro, will get a heroic send off at the leaders club
grounds wednesday in Dar es Salaam.

Later, he will be flown to Nairobi, Kenya according to the wishes of his
parents. Tyson will be remembered for his skills which have brought a
significant change and revolution in television and film production in
Tanzania.

DEPUTY Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, January Makamba,
on Saturday expressed his shock and sadness following the death of renowned
Film Director, George Otieno alias ‘Tyson’ who died in a car crash on
Friday evening near Gairo in Morogoro.

“I would like to join my fellow youths and all Tanzanians who are passing
through this hard time to mourn Otieno’s sudden demise.

It is so sad that within a month or so the local film industry lost three
figures… it is a tragedy,” he said, while recounting the death of another
film director Adam Kuambiana and actress Rachel Haule.

Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC), David Misime confirmed the news on
‘Tyson’s death, saying that at least four other people in the car were
rushed to hospital after suffering multiple injuries.

“It happened around 06:42 pm on Friday evening, the car with registration
number T. 150 CWA (Toyota Granvia Station Wagon) driven by Mgeni Shemakame
(29) veered off the road and rolled several times in Silwa village,” he
said.

He named those injured as Nixon Kabumbile (31), Grace Meena (28), Ntwa
Kabole (33) and Justine Bayo (27). Tyson was just coming back from Dodoma
where he went with Mboni Show crew to donate desks to Chaula Primary School
in Dodoma and celebrate two years of the Mboni Show.

Several artists have posted in social media on how they knew him and how
they felt after receiving news on his death.

“George, you were my first director, then a friend, you became my lover,
then husband, then a father to my first girl Sonia Akinyi. We then turned
to enemies, then we came back to be friends, Sonia, your angel as you
always called her can’t believe what happened. I cry, I cry down to my
heart, I have great pains,” wrote Yvonne Cherry alias Monalisa.

The late Otieno’s body was transferred to Dar es Salaam from Morogoro on
Saturday.
