The recently appointed President of Alliance for a Green Revolution in
Africa (AGRA) Ms. Jane Karuku is making her maiden visit to Tanzania
in her official capacity this Wednesday (22nd 08 2012).
Like many other leaders, Ms Karuku, believes smallholder farmers – in
Tanzania and other African nations are a key lever to food security.
“Ms. Karuku will be making her first official visit to Tanzania to
meet with key government officials and key AGRA partners including
grantees and donors,” said AGRA Communications and Public Affairs
Director Ms Sylvia Mwichuli.
Ms Karuku, a renowned business leader took over from Dr Namanga Ngongi
who is retired after five years with AGRA and a long career in
development.
Her itenary includes meeting with top government officials and members
of the civil society at a cocktail at Hyatt Regency, The Kilimanjaro
on Thursday evening (23rd 08 2012).
During Ms Karuku’s trip, apart from meeting with top government
officials, she will visit a cross section of stakeholders in the green
revolution drive including the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor
of Tanzania (SAGCOT), USAID, NORWEGIAN EMBASSY and IITA Regional
Office.
According to Ms Mwichuli, AGRA president, together with top government
officials will make announcements that will up the take of overall
agri-business in Tanzania during her trip.
It is notable that Tanzania is among AGRA\’s first priority countries,
which includes as well Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria and Ethiopia.
These are countries whose agri-potential impact and the likelihood of
success is great for mass social economical transformation.
AGRA is working across the food value chain In Tanzania supporting the
government’s effort, the private sector and the farmers in various
areas for the realization of the greater goal of food security.
We work with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and
Cooperatives, NEPAD, the National Microfinance Bank Ltd, Kilimo Trust,
Sokoine University, private seed companies, farmers’ cooperatives and
many others, said Ms Sylvia Mwichuli.
