THE government urged the national ladies team golfers to work hard and excel in the All Africa Challenge Trophy golf tournament which tees off at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club course today.
The Director of Sports in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, Yusuph Singo who represented the docket Minister, Mohamed Mchengerwa, called on the golfer to repeat what they did in the previous event held in Ghana where the Tanzanian envoys finished runners up in team category and number one on individual discipline.
“We are aware that in the last event held in Ghana in 2018 you finished overall runners up whereas Madina Iddi took the individual category’s trophy. Now you are at a home course I am sure you will achieve above that,” he said.
He complimented Mauritius who are debutants in the event that has drawn 21 teams in a race for the top honour and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) for their massive contributions towards the competition and development of the game. He also challenged AACT to continue motivating more countries to join the event as Africa consists of 51 countries.
The 15th edition of the tournament will see teams compete over 54 holes in three days with best two-gross count from three players. The National Sports Council (NSC) official Neema Msitha also welcomed all visiting teams to Tanzania saying it is a peaceful country.
Tanzania Ladies golf team, ‘Tanzania One’ also vowed to fight hard for the honour of the country and they are ready for the challenge. The national team led by captain Hawa Wanyeche is made by Madina Iddi, Angel Eaton and Neema Olomi.
They entered the residential camp on August 25th this year in Dar es Salaam under two coaches; Rajab Iddi and Geoffrey Leverian. Sophia Viggo, the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) President and the team manager said they are ready for the business ahead.
Participating teams are Nigeria, Botswana, Malawi, Uganda, Togo, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Mali, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Egypt, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Tanzania.
