German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to begin a four-day tour of Africa on Wednesday, with visits to Nigeria, South Africa, and Lesotho. His journey will kick off in Abuja, where he is scheduled to meet with Omar Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), before receiving an official welcome from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Steinmeier’s office has highlighted Nigeria and South Africa as key economic players in Africa, noting their strategic importance to Germany. The German president will be accompanied by a business delegation, with the visit aimed at strengthening political and economic ties between Germany and these influential nations.
Nigeria’s role as a diplomatic leader and stabilizing force in West Africa will be a focal point of the visit, with Steinmeier’s office emphasizing its significant influence on the continent. In South Africa, Steinmeier will also extend Germany’s appreciation for the country’s leadership role as it took on the G20 presidency earlier this month.
The trip will conclude with Steinmeier’s historic visit to Lesotho, making him the first German head of state to visit the landlocked nation. The invitation was extended by King Letsie III during his visit to Germany last year.
