The High Commission of India in Tanzania has highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in narrowing Africa’s digital divide and equipping diplomats with advanced tools to navigate global complexities.
During a special reception and talk on AI in Diplomacy held in Dar es Salaam, Indian High Commissioner Bishwadip Dey underscored AI’s growing influence in international relations. He praised the technology for enhancing decision-making processes and fostering a deeper understanding of global dynamics. The event, he noted, was pivotal in preparing diplomats to leverage AI for more effective diplomacy.
Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, a leading academic institution, contributed their insights into the role of AI in reshaping diplomacy. Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean of Global Engagement at IIT Madras, emphasized AI’s potential in analytical decision-making, providing diplomats with sophisticated tools to enhance negotiation strategies.
Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Director of IIT Madras Zanzibar, introduced attendees to educational opportunities available at the newly established IIT Madras Zanzibar campus. She highlighted programs in AI, Data Science, and Ocean Structures, encouraging diplomats to advocate for student enrollment in these cutting-edge fields.
Zanzibar’s Deputy Principal Secretary for Education, Mwanakhamis Adam Ameir, shared the government’s vision of positioning IIT Madras Zanzibar as a pan-African hub for advanced education. She invited ambassadors to visit the campus and promote its role in shaping the continent’s technological future.
Adding to the event’s significance, Airtel Tanzania Managing Director Charles Kamoto announced the launch of the Airtel Africa Fellowship. This initiative aims to promote educational excellence and digital innovation by supporting students at IIT Madras Zanzibar.
Participants, including ambassadors and diplomats, expressed enthusiasm about potential collaborations with IIT Madras Zanzibar. They recognized AI’s importance in addressing global challenges and enhancing Africa’s role in diplomacy and innovation.
This gathering marked a significant step in strengthening India-Africa ties, with a focus on education and technology as key drivers of the partnership.
