With Donald Trump’s recent re-election to the White House, African nations are extending congratulations, hopeful for a cooperative relationship built on mutual respect. However, concerns linger about his isolationist stance, especially if Republicans retain control of both houses of Congress.
A key area of focus is the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which supports African exports to the United States. Its future, however, remains uncertain, as experts predict Trump may prioritize a bilateral approach that could undermine AGOA’s benefits.
In terms of infrastructure, the U.S. is launching competitive initiatives with China, such as the “Lobito Corridor,” aimed at connecting several African nations. Meanwhile, Trump’s stance on security could involve a reduction in U.S. military presence in Africa, despite ongoing jihadist threats.
Additionally, U.S. aid, which amounts to around $4 billion in 2024, faces potential cuts, alongside growing concerns over Trump’s environmental policies and their impact on sustainability efforts across the continent.
