Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading provider of sustainable building solutions and member of the Holcim Group, has launched an Alternative Fuel and Raw Material (AFR) platform at its Mfamosing plant in Cross River State, Nigeria. This new facility supports Lafarge’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact, promoting local economic growth, and setting new benchmarks for sustainability in Nigeria’s construction sector.
The AFR platform will enable Lafarge Africa to cut its carbon footprint by replacing conventional fossil fuels with alternative energy sources derived from non-recyclable waste. This approach not only reduces CO2 emissions but also aligns with the company’s vision for sustainable practices in Nigeria and across Africa.
Speaking at the launch, Lafarge Africa’s GMD/CEO, Mr. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, described the facility as a milestone for Nigeria’s construction industry. “This facility will allow us to use alternative fuels and materials in our production process, reducing CO2 emissions and positioning us as a leader in sustainable practices across Nigeria and Africa,” he said.
Alade-Akinyemi also emphasized the AFR platform’s potential to boost local economic empowerment by creating jobs across the waste collection, sorting, and supply chain. This demand will support local truck operators, logistics providers, and small to medium enterprises, fostering job creation and empowering communities.
Daniel Adedokun, Head of Lafarge Geocycle, highlighted the AFR platform’s alignment with Nigeria’s national Net Zero emissions goal, saying, “As we activate this platform, we look forward to scaling its impact, strengthening partnerships with industries and communities, and leading sustainable practices within Nigeria. This project is essential to the country’s journey to reduce CO2 emissions.”
Prince Bassey Otu, Governor of Cross River State, represented by Finance Commissioner Michael Odere, commended Lafarge for supporting the state’s environmental and economic goals. “This project is a significant step towards a cleaner environment and reflects how public and private sectors can collaborate for sustainable development,” Odere remarked.
Cross River State’s Environment Commissioner, Moses Osogi, praised Lafarge for its innovative approach to turning waste into wealth and creating youth employment. “Lafarge is leading by example, empowering the youth and setting new standards in environmental responsibility,” he said, adding that the ministry fully supports such initiatives.
Etukudo Etim, State Coordinator for the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in Cross River State, lauded Lafarge’s focus on sustainability, calling it a model for community engagement and environmental stewardship. “This project is a win-win for both the environment and the economy,” he noted.
Eromosele Itala, Environmental Supervisor & Manager of Waste Management at Chevron Nigeria, highlighted Chevron’s partnership with Lafarge, emphasizing their shared commitment to sustainable waste management. “Since 2021, we’ve worked together to transform waste into alternative fuel for cement production. This partnership addresses one of our biggest urban challenges—sustainable waste management,” he concluded.
With the AFR platform, Lafarge Africa is taking a bold step towards reducing emissions, driving economic empowerment, and setting new sustainability standards in Nigeria.
