A local contestant for Miss Africa Great Britain 2024, Nadine Azari, is determined to inspire young African girls in Guernsey through her participation in the beauty pageant. After securing a spot in the top five in 2022, she has once again advanced to the finals.
Miss Africa Great Britain, which features 20 finalists from across the UK, aims to empower African women by providing a platform to showcase their beauty, intelligence, talents, and community involvement. This year, Nadine will be raising funds for Guernsey Mind, having previously raised £750 for Whitechapel Mission, a charity supporting the homeless in London.
Nadine, who now works in the finance sector at Lloyds Bank, was forced to flee Ukraine within 24 hours due to the ongoing conflict. Despite this upheaval, she continued her medical studies online and in Poland before settling into life on the island of Guernsey.
As she prepares for the Miss Africa Great Britain finals in October, Nadine will compete in four rounds in front of judges and an audience: evening dress, fitness in swimsuit, national costume, and talent.
“I’m thrilled to represent Guernsey once again in the finals,” Nadine said. “Having the opportunity to inspire young African girls on the island through a platform like Miss Africa Great Britain is incredible.”
The competition encourages contestants to engage in various charitable initiatives, particularly those benefiting communities in Africa and the African diaspora. As part of her involvement, Nadine will be fundraising for Guernsey Mind through a sponsored walk around the island, which she plans to document to highlight Guernsey’s unique beauty.
“The Miss Africa Great Britain competition values leadership and community involvement, making it the perfect platform to advocate for mental wellbeing,” Nadine explained. “I hope to help reduce the stigma around mental health, promote mental health services, and make a meaningful impact both locally and within the wider African diaspora.”
