As part of eThekwini Municipality’s Fashion Development Programme, the DFF provides a platform for local designers to showcase their collections to an array of potential buyers and industry experts. Major retailers such as Pick n Pay Clothing, Edgars, Foschini, The Hub, and Contempo, among others, are in attendance, scouting for fresh talent and unique products.

The event has been a spectacle of creativity, with models strutting down the runway in the latest designs from Durban’s fashion scene. The Daily News caught up with some of the designers who shared insights into their inspirations and future plans.

Sithembile Mncwango, the 31-year-old director of SMcreations and a 2019 graduate of the DFF Rising Stars, revealed that her designs are inspired by the vibrant and blooming nature of flowers. Mncwango, who grew up in a household of creatives and seamstresses, expressed her ambitions to host her own shows and eventually open her own boutiques.

Mzwandile Mathonsi, the owner of Zwanddyy, shared his excitement about being part of the DFF’s 13th installment. Specializing in ladies’ wear, Mathonsi reflected on the theme “Coming of Age” and how it influenced his collection. For him, the theme symbolized the journey of a young girl transitioning into womanhood, embracing independence, exploring the world, and celebrating her achievements. Mathonsi crafted 15 garments in just three weeks using materials sourced from stores in Durban’s CBD. He aims to establish his brand locally before expanding nationwide, with aspirations of owning a shop in a major shopping center.

Councillor Puleng Hlomuka, whip of the municipality’s economic development and planning committee, praised the dedication and hard work of the designers, noting that these qualities are essential for entrepreneurial success. Hlomuka highlighted the positive outcomes of the City’s investment in the fashion industry.

The DFF continues until Friday, culminating in a grand finale where all eyes will be on the 2024 DFF mentees as they make their debut in the industry.
