Chidimma Adetshina has been named Miss Universe Nigeria, overcoming recent challenges following a controversial attempt to compete in Miss South Africa.
The 23-year-old, who was born to a Nigerian father and South African mother in South Africa, faced backlash from some South Africans, including a government minister, due to her dual heritage. This opposition led her to withdraw from the Miss South Africa competition.
In her acceptance speech, Adetshina expressed her pride and hopes for unity: “This crown represents more than just beauty; it symbolizes our unity. I am honored to represent Nigeria at Miss Universe, and I am confident we will achieve great success.”
The controversy surrounding Adetshina highlighted the xenophobia faced by Nigerians in South Africa, which has sometimes escalated into violence and attacks on Nigerian businesses.
Adetshina will now go on to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November.
