Hello, world! This is Elly Kimbwereza, reporting from my home base, Tona Lodge, situated in the serene Southern Pare. Amidst the sprawling landscapes and tucked away corners of northeastern Tanzania, lies a place that has always been incredibly close to my heart – the Pare Mountains. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live in the shadows of these majestic peaks, allow me to take you on a virtual tour.
The Pare Mountains, an integral part of the Eastern Arc range, are a sight to behold. A compilation of 52 named peaks, this captivating range is divided into two remarkable sub-ranges: Northern and Southern Pare. Each carries its own distinctive charm and houses a wealth of biodiversity within its borders.
The highest and most prominent peak of this range is the formidable Shengena Peak, perched at a dizzying height of 2,463 meters or 8,081 feet. Situated in Southern Pare, it offers breath-taking panoramic views that remind you of nature’s grandeur and your small yet significant place within it. While Shengena stands tall as the jewel of the Pare Mountains, the other peaks are equally captivating, each carrying a story of its own.
Life in these mountains is a delicate dance between embracing the raw beauty of nature and acknowledging the challenging terrains it presents. Each day, the sun breaks over the mountain peaks, bathing the landscape in a warm, golden light, the sheer beauty of which is enough to take your breath away. The valleys are brimming with lush vegetation, the product of a temperate climate that oscillates between the tropics’ warmth and the high altitudes’ chill.
Living here has made me appreciate the diversity and resilience of nature more than ever. The mountains are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, each species perfectly adapted to the harsh realities of mountain life. In this beautifully harsh wilderness, you will find endemic species that are unique to this ecosystem, an essential part of the intricate web of life here.
Moreover, the Pare Mountains are a vibrant hub of human cultures as well. The Pare people, native to these lands, have cultivated a deep bond with this land over generations. Their lives are intertwined with the rhythms of these mountains, their customs shaped by the peaks and valleys of this rugged terrain. Their traditions and stories, passed down through generations, add to the rich tapestry of this place, making it as culturally captivating as it is naturally stunning.
In essence, the Pare Mountains are a testament to the beauty and resilience of life on Earth. They symbolize the delicate balance between humans and nature, an equilibrium that we must strive to maintain for the sake of our future generations. Living here, amidst these towering peaks and lush valleys, has been a humbling and enlightening experience, reminding me that we are but a small part of a vast, interconnected web of life.
From my perch at Tona Lodge, nestled in the cradle of the Southern Pare, I look out at these magnificent peaks with a sense of wonder and gratitude. I am fortunate to be a part of this landscape and dedicated to preserving and sharing its beauty with the world.
I invite you all to experience the magic of the Pare Mountains, to hear the whispers of the wind through the valleys, and to see the resilience of life thriving amidst the rugged beauty of these peaks. Welcome to the Pare Mountains, a slice of heaven on Earth.
Yours Sincerely, Elly Kimbwereza, MD Tona Lodge, Mbaga Manka, Tanzania
