Lewis Hamilton has long expressed his desire to race in Africa, and it seems his wish may soon be realized. South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has confirmed that plans are in motion for the country’s return to the Formula 1 calendar.

In an interview with SuperSport, McKenzie shared his optimism for the event, revealing that a committee will soon be formed to oversee the selection of an F1 promoter. “We are in the process of finalizing plans, and next week we’ll announce the committee that will choose the promoter for the race,” McKenzie said. “The race will take place at Kyalami.”

Kyalami Circuit, which previously hosted F1 races, is undergoing significant upgrades to meet international standards. “Kyalami is doing everything necessary to get the track ready,” McKenzie explained. “Toby Venter and Willie Venter are putting in a lot of effort and investment to bring the circuit up to F1 standards.”

Looking ahead, McKenzie anticipates the race will return in 2027. “The company Apex is working on track upgrades to ensure everything meets F1’s requirements, and we’re aiming for 2027,” he confirmed.

The last F1 race held in South Africa was at the Kyalami Circuit in 1993, where Alain Prost claimed victory. Fans across the nation are now hopeful to witness the excitement of F1 racing once again on their home turf.
