Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has called on African governments to prohibit Kemi Badenoch, a prominent member of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, from visiting the continent. His comments follow Badenoch’s controversial remarks about Nigeria.
According to Daily Post, Badenoch, who has previously spoken about her upbringing in Nigeria, described it as marked by fear, insecurity, and corruption. Her statements have drawn criticism from Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima and others, who accuse her of disrespecting the country.
During an Instagram live session, Kuti strongly condemned Badenoch, claiming she insulted not only Nigerians but also their ancestors. He alleged that she supports the idea of Africans compensating Europeans for colonialism, despite the atrocities committed during that era.
“People are praising this woman who has been openly disrespecting us,” Kuti said. “She claims we should pay Europeans for colonialism—for killing millions of our ancestors and the horrors they inflicted on our lands. African governments should ban her from stepping foot on this continent. If she does, she should be jailed.”
Kuti’s remarks have sparked discussions about the influence of diasporan African politicians and their perspectives on the continent.
