Samuel Eto’o predicts surprise World Cup final between Cameroon and Morocco and says all five African nations will qualify from the group stage

Samuel Eto’o has boldly predicted an all-African World Cup final between Cameroon and Morocco in Qatar next month.

Eto’o scored 56 goals in 118 games in a 17-year international career with Cameroon

Five African teams will be involved in Qatar and Eto’o predicts good showings from Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana and Cameroon as they bid to become the first team from the continent to win a World Cup.

“I see the five African teams qualifying from the group stage,” Eto’o told Spanish daily AS, “I’d even put Cameroon, Morocco and Senegal as first in the group.”

Cameroon face a fight on their hands to qualify from Group B alongside Switzerland, Serbia and competition favourites Brazil.

Morocco’s bid to reach the final begins with Group F clashes against Canada, Croatia and Belgium.

Eto’o’s dreams of seeing an African final even led him to drawing up the pathway of both nations.

He views Morocco’s path as including victories against Spain in the round of 16, Portugal in the quarter-final and France in the semi-final.

For his home nation Cameroon, he expects to see them overcome Belgium in the quarter-finals and African champions Senegal in the semi-finals.

Few would have chosen Eto’o’s two finalists with the 41-year-old perhaps living more in hope than expectation.

The bookies are backing Brazil to lift their sixth World Cup in Qatar, followed by neighbour’s Argentina, with holders France in third above England in fourth.

Eto’o won the 2008/09 Champions League title alongside Xavi at Barcelona

Eto’o carved out a successful career winning the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009 and again with Inter Milan in 2010.

The striker also won the Africa Cup of Nations titles with Cameroon in 2000 an 2002.

He had two spells in the Premier League, firstly with Chelsea in 2013-14 and Everton the following season.
