Raila Odinga is ramping up his campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position ahead of the election in February 2025, set to take place during the 38th AU Summit of Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
His recent diplomatic efforts follow a visit to Eritrea, where he was hosted by President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara. On Monday, Raila continued his push in North Africa, meeting Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat. The two discussed Raila’s vision for a more effective African Union.
In a statement after their meeting, Raila emphasized his dedication to initiatives aimed at fostering unity, growth, and prosperity across the continent. “Our discussions centered on my vision for Africa and my plans to strengthen the African Union Commission if elected,” he shared.
Among the key priorities highlighted during their conversation were enhancing connectivity through infrastructure development, establishing visa-free movement, and expanding intra-African trade. Raila stressed that these initiatives would contribute to sustainable development and create opportunities for Africa’s youth.
“We also spoke about the importance of unity among Africans, as it will give us a stronger voice on the global stage,” he added during their joint press appearance.
Minister Bourita expressed his appreciation for Raila’s visit, calling it significant in helping Morocco understand his candidacy and vision for the AUC.
Raila’s campaign gained further momentum following his Eritrean visit, where President Afwerki pledged his support. “My vision is to strengthen Pan-Africanism through the AU by improving connectivity to facilitate the movement of people and goods,” Raila explained.
As Raila continues his diplomatic tour across Africa, he is steadily gaining endorsements for his candidacy. With growing support, Raila will face competition from Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar in the upcoming election.
The chairperson will succeed Moussa Faki, who will complete his two-term tenure. Although three other candidates from Somalia, Mauritius, and Seychelles have withdrawn, Raila has already secured endorsements from 21 member states.
