Nature, Wellness, and Stargazing: The Family Behind Scotland’s Eco-Friendly Glamping Site

A family that once lived a nomadic lifestyle in South Africa is now preparing to launch a unique, off-grid glamping experience in Dumfries and Galloway’s renowned “dark sky” park.

Lottie Reeves, her partner Kevin, her mother, and their two young children made the move to Scotland during the lockdown, settling in the Castle Douglas area. Now, with the help of funding from the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme and GC Business Finance, the family is transforming their new home into a hospitality venture.

On seven acres of land bordering Galloway Forest Park, the family is building four wooden cabins designed for guests seeking an “off-grid escape” and a chance to marvel at the stars. The site, named Galloway Glamping, is set within Galloway Forest Park, which was one of the world’s first designated International Dark Sky Parks in 2009, a recognition given for its commitment to reducing light pollution and preserving pristine night skies.

The eco-friendly cabins come with luxury features like hot tubs and fire pits, but in keeping with the “back-to-nature” ethos, there’s no Wi-Fi. Located along the shores of Loch Ken, guests will also have access to water sports and wild swimming.

Lottie Reeves explained, “I’ve always been passionate about nature and wellness, so combining these with tourism felt like the perfect fit. During lockdown, Kevin viewed a house in Castle Douglas, and despite never having seen it myself, I decided to take the plunge. It turned out to be perfect, and with all the land surrounding the house, it felt ideal for our glamping project.”

While rising construction costs have posed some challenges, Lottie credited the Start Up Loans programme for providing crucial support.

Barry McCulloch, a senior manager at the British Business Bank, commented: “Tourism is vital to Scotland’s economy, and the staycation market has flourished since the pandemic. Galloway Glamping will offer families the chance to enjoy nature and stargazing while still enjoying a bit of luxury.”

Since its inception in 2012, the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme has helped 189 entrepreneurs in Dumfries and Galloway, providing more than £1.5 million in loans to new businesses.
