DAR ES SALAAM: FORMER President Jakaya Kikwete has joined other famous figures across the world to congratulate Speaker Dr Tulia Ackson for being elected as the President of the global Inter – Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Dr Tulia’s victory makes her the 31st president of the IPU and the first woman from the African continent to hold the position.
With four candidates on the ballot, the new IPU President was elected with 57 per cent of the votes after a single round of voting, whereby hundreds of parliamentarians from 130 IPU Member Parliaments voted in the election held in Luanda, Angola on Friday.
Following the good news, the former Tanzania’s head of state posted on X (formerly Twitter) via his verified @jmkikwete handle saying:
“Congratulations @TuliaAckson on your well-deserved election as President of the global Inter – Parliamentary Union (IPU). You have made us all proud! Good luck in your new role as the top political leader of the #IPU.”
