South African midfielder Bongani Zungu, 32, recently returned home as a free agent following unsuccessful contract talks with Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca under coach Rulani Mokwena. Despite Kaizer Chiefs’ need for midfield support, sources reveal the club has shown little interest in pursuing Zungu.
According to FARPost journalist Mthokozisi Dube, “Zungu has been linked to several clubs, including Chiefs, but Amakhosi doesn’t appear interested in bringing him on board. The coaching staff reportedly has other priorities and does not consider Zungu a suitable fit for their roster.” Dube emphasized that FARPost’s findings confirm no negotiations between Zungu and Chiefs.
In related news, Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune opened up about the growing trend of salary reductions for players over 30. Referencing previous cases like Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly, the 37-year-old acknowledged that pay cuts have become more common at Amakhosi.
Khune, born in Ventersdorp, reflected, “At a certain age, clubs focus more on payroll adjustments, and older players often face reduced salaries. For me, it’s no longer about the money but the love of the game. I willingly accepted cuts to keep doing what I love and make fans happy.”
Despite the financial adjustments, Khune shared his loyalty to the team. “I couldn’t imagine wearing another jersey. Chiefs has been my club, my family, throughout my career,” he concluded.
