Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court this morning following his repatriation from Tanzania on Thursday.
The Mangaung Correctional Centre escapee was re-arrested by the South African Police Service on his arrival into the country and immediately transported to a C-Max prison where he is under the Department of Correctional Service supervision.
Bester faces a charge of escaping from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a dead body and fraud.
On Thursday, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola confirmed that Bester was readmitted into the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility in Pretoria and will be under 24-hour surveillance.
Bester, dubbed the “Facebook rapist” for luring women on social media with promises of modelling contracts but instead robbing and raping them, escaped from lawful custody in 2022 after faking his death.
He had been on the run with hisaesthetic doctor girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana.
His accomplice, Magudumana made a brief court appearance on Thursday where she was charged with assisting a prisoner to escape, harboring an offender, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a corpse and fraud.
